Exhibition "SUITEKI" at Yanmar Headquarters
We are pleased to introduce an art project supported by the Yamaoka Memorial Foundation, which promotes German–Japanese cultural exchange, and realized by the Goethe-Institut Villa Kamogawa from an artistic perspective.
From July 1 to August 31, two works are on display on the first floor of the Yanmar Headquarters (FlyingY Building): the objects "Suiteki (Water Drop)" and "Nut Family (Nutcracker Dolls)", created by German designer Kai Linke in collaboration with long-established Japanese lacquerware studio Sato Kiyomatsu Shoten.

On the opening day, July 1, a commemorative ceremony was held with the participation of Kai Linke, Mr. Sato, Consul General Melanie Saxinger (Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Osaka-Kobe), and Director Wetzel (Goethe-Institut Villa Kamogawa).

These works were created as part of a project launched under the theme of Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai: "Designing Future Society for Our Lives." On July 4, the project was also introduced in an interview session on the stage of the German Pavilion, where the exhibition at Yanmar Headquarters was presented as well.
About the Works
1. "Suiteki (Water Drop)"
Water drops are symbols of life and vitality worldwide.
Inspired by the recent severe heat waves in both Japan and Germany, this piece draws attention to the importance of water and conveys a message about our relationship with water resources. Visitors can also enjoy its harmony with the waterfall feature in the relaxing space on the first floor of the FlyingY Building.
2. "Nut Family (Nutcracker Dolls)"
This work applies Japanese lacquer to nutcracker dolls, which are beloved in Germany by both adults and children. The three nutcrackers represent a family: father, mother, and child. The work symbolizes the deep ties between Japan and Germany, blending the craftsmanship traditions of both countries.
These creations embody the fusion of Japanese lacquer art, with its history of over 1,000 years, and contemporary design. They highlight the unique texture and temporality of lacquer, the precision and patience of lacquer artisans, and the versatility of lacquer as a material.
Please take the opportunity to see these works in person, which unite tradition and innovation while expressing a wish for a sustainable future.
